From Resistance to Reparations: A Black August Teach-In, hosted by the New Jersey Institute for Social Justice and co-sponsored by a coalition of grassroots organizations. This event brings together leading advocates, organizers, and scholars actively shaping the conversation around reparations, Black August, and justice in New Jersey.
The panel dives into the history and legacy of Black August, the ongoing fight for reparations, key findings from the recently released New Jersey Reparations Council report, and practical strategies for building power and advancing justice today.
Meet the Presenters:

Jean-Pierre Brutus, Esq., Ph.D.
Senior Counsel in the Economic Justice Program of the NJ Institute for Social Justice. Dr. Brutus focuses on policy change for economic equity and has been a key contributor to reparations advocacy work in New Jersey. -
Assatta Mann
Senior Community Organizer at the NJ Institute for Social Justice, Assatta leads grassroots campaigns and plays a central role in community engagement and mobilization for racial justice initiatives. -
Charlene D. Walker
Executive Director of Faith in New Jersey, Charlene is a faith-based organizer committed to building Black-led, multi-racial movements for justice and liberation across the state. -
Zayid Muhammad
Lead Organizer with NJ Communities for Accountable Policing (NJCAP) and Associate Producer of “All Politics Are Local,” Zayid is a longtime activist who also brings deep insights from the Black August and political prisoner movements. -
Laissa C. Alexis
Research Fellow for the NJ Reparations Council and Communications Fellow at the NJ Institute for Social Justice. Laissa works to amplify key findings and recommendations of the state’s landmark reparations council report, with a focus on truth-telling and community empowerment.
