Black educators are being maligned, targeted, and removed from schools and districts throughout the state of New York. Y’all didn’t hear what I just said. This is happening. That’s right. From the district leadership level, to the principal level, to the teacher level — we’re talking about reparations, and we’re still being harmed and injured in present-day reality. Yes, sir. What are the implications of this in terms of bias, racism, and its impact on student achievement?
Black men make up 4% of teachers in New York State. 4%. And it’s no wonder that Black boys are the highest on suspension rate data, with an overrepresentation in special education through these subjective labels. Black girls in STEM are at the lowest data point when it comes to science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics. And we know that our children are going to be dealing with AI and all kinds of sciences. So we need more STEM programs in our schools and, of course, equitable funding. We’ve all heard about the Campaign for Fiscal Equity.
And if you ask an elected official — if you ask the governor — I’m sure she’ll say, “Well, we funded it.” You funded an old formula. You have to update the formula to meet the new — what do they call it?
“What do you call it when things go up?”
“Inflation.”
“Inflation.”
